Radio Shows
Radio is my favorite form of media. It requires engaging the mind with thought, and imagination. But it also allows for relaxation, reflection, and inspiration. It doesn’t require visual attention as the television, and does not require physical attention as the computer.
Radio is (for now) still mostly analog, meaning you can pull in very weak stations from across the world with a proper antenna and tuner. Using a simple 2-meter ham radio, an antenna, and repeaters I can speak to my friends in Whitewater, Catalina Island, Riverside, and as far South as San Diego. On internet repeaters I’ve spoken to people as far as Australia. I’m hoping to catch the astronauts on the Space Shuttle sometime.
These are some of my favorite shows:
- A Prairie Home Companion — Garrison Keillor variety show.
- Clark Howard Show — Save more, spend less and avoid rip-offs.
- Cranky Geeks — With John Dvorak (this is video)
- The Scriptorium Daily: Middlebrow — An audio show by Scriptorium on Culture, Christianity, and the West, where Big Ideas undergo the Digital Martyrdom.
- Wait Wait… Don’t tell me! — The oddly informative news quiz.
- Wall Street Unspun with Peter Schiff — 5pm Pacific on shortwave 5.070 MHz.
I used to miss a lot of shows, but now most are available on podcasts (some I discovered in Podcast form first). Since they’re recorded and downloaded to my computer I can listen to them anytime I want. So on Saturdays I plug the Macbook Pro into a Tivoli Model One and listen to my favorite shows while sipping on coffee and peppermint sticks.
